For those who have never met one, Exos are a race of sentient machine people created by uploading a consciousness to an artificial body. Most often they are engaged on the front lines of war against an all-consuming Darkness. Their names are simple: A noun or human name followed by a number. The number itself is rumored to be how many times an Exo has had their mind wiped and "reset".
Riddle's number is 17^2; that's 289 mind wipes. It's miraculous he has any semblance of sanity left, but he's proven surprisingly resilient. Beneath his armor, the words 'NEVER GIVE YOUR FULL NUMBER' are engraved on his forearm, likely a reminder from a past iteration. In his current iteration, Riddle has been starting to display the quirks indicative of needing another memory wipe soon. In an attempt to avoid wipe #290, his Ghost has convinced him to go on leave. Maybe this place will provide him the reprieve he needs to retain his sanity.
As a Warlock, Riddle wields the dark energies of the Void, enabling him to launch bolts of concentrated energy, drain the life force of his enemies, and even teleport on a limited basis. Despite these powers, he much prefers the use of his sniper rifle in the field. He claims it gives him a feeling of 'zen' to 'make a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away.'
While Riddle can't speak much about his past, there are a handful of surviving engineers from the City who have been able to provide bits and pieces. Before his upload to his current body, Riddle fought the Vex on Venus. He raided the Black Garden with several other Guardians, but the dark presence within overwhelmed them. Whatever he experienced shook him so deeply that even reformatting his mind couldn't fully erase the scarring of that day, requiring a fresh reboot whenever it resurfaces.
